Forget walking like an Egyption, try dancing like an Ethiopian

During my last week in Ethiopia I finally got a couple friends to teach me how to dance. Each group has a different style of dancing. One friend taught me some moves from the Amhara region and another taught me moves from her tribe, the Gurage.

Learning to shimmy my shoulders like an Ethiopian- not as easy as it looks!

It was a lot of fun but I need a ton of work. When I looked  my friends move, it was as if their shoulders were just rolling  effortlessly with perfect fluidity and control. It looks easy, but it’s not. It wasn’t to me anyway. My shoulders felt so stiff compared to how I’d imagined they’d feel. It’s amazing discovering certain parts of our body that we don’t use.

Here are some professionals doing what they do best. This is what blew my mind everytime I went to see them and this is what makes me love dance.
